The fabrics that best resist the sun… and sunscreen

1) Solution-dyed acrylic

  • What it is: colour integrated into the polymer before spinning.
  • Advantages: outstanding lightfastness, breathable, mould resistant, washable (some brands allow bleach dilutions). Ideal for mats, backrests, bimini tops.
  • With sun cream: it tends to repel greasy stains better if cleaned promptly.

2) Premium marine vinyl with polyurethane (PU) topcoat

  • What it is: PVC/PVC-PU base with anti-UV, antimicrobial and stain-resistant PU finish.
  • Advantages: easy to clean, waterproof, highly resistant to sun cream, oils and dyes.
  • Uses: bathtub seats, solariums and areas with a lot of ‘up and down’ movement.

3) Cool fabrics (textilene/technical mesh)

  • What it is: open polyester/PVC fabrics or micro-perforated vinyl.
  • Advantages: dissipate heat, drain quickly, resistant to UV rays and mould.

4) Latest generation marine olefin/PP

  • What it is: polyolefin fibres treated for outdoor use.
  • Advantages: lightweight, UV stable, good value for money.
  • Nuance: less smooth to the touch than premium acrylic.

Beyond fabric: foam, thread and seams that extend life

  • Closed-cell foam (or fast-draining reticulated foam): prevents cream/oils from soaking into the core and reduces mould/odour.
  • PTFE thread (e.g. Tenara®): does not degrade under UV light; seams last as long as the fabric.
  • Sealed seams and covered piping: less water ingress and fewer yellowish ‘edges’.
  • Antibacterial backing and barrier film: prevent migration from foam or wood.

How can I prevent yellowing caused by sunscreen?

Can I use bleach?
On standard marine acrylics, yes, diluted and according to protocol; on vinyl, avoid undiluted bleach. If in doubt, test on a hidden area or consult us at Services.

What ensures that the seams do not ‘open up’?

Is perforated mesh less comfortable?
