How to calculate your daily electricity consumption
Before choosing panels or batteries, make a list of the devices on board: LED lights, bilge pump, refrigerator, USB chargers, etc. Write down the consumption of each one in watts and multiply it by the estimated hours of use per day. This will give you a daily estimate in Wh.
For example:
- Refrigerator: 60W x 8h = 480Wh
- LED lights: 20W x 6h = 120Wh
- USB charging: 50W x 2h = 100Wh
Total: 700Wh/day. Add an extra 30% as a safety margin.
Types of panels and location
Rigid panels offer greater efficiency but require support structures. Flexible panels are lightweight and can be installed on awnings or curved roofs. In models such as the Crownline 220 SS or Crownline 264 CR, you can install solar systems without sacrificing living space.
Choose areas with good sun exposure and avoid shadows from antennas, sails or awnings. The panels must be well ventilated to prevent overheating.
